For individuals and businesses alike, security is the number one priority in today’s world. With an increasing number of potential threats, ensuring the safety of employees, visitors and clients has to be at the top of every company’s to-do list. This includes taking the proper precautions for every potential threat ranging from a power outage to a terrorist attack.

The Peterson Company, who owns National Harbor Complex in National Harbor, MD is doing just that. With 10 million visitors a year, the development is projecting an additional 20,000 visitors a day thanks to the opening of the nearby MGM National Harbor Casino back in December.

The Security Challenge: Building around 21st-Century Threats is an article written by Patrick J. Kiger that discusses how the Peterson Company and many other companies have built developments with potential threats in mind, creating state of the art security all throughout their developments.

Here is more information on how The Peterson Company is taking steps to protect the National Harbor Complex, along with how you can protect yourself as well.

State of the Art Security Using Protective Design

Kigler’s article states that some recent innovations in buildings includes the development of energy-absorbing systems for windows. These windows are designed to bend and deform in order to help dissipate the force from an explosion. Many companies and even schools are installing these windows, or some similar, in order to protect against potential threats. In fact, Liberty School in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma decided to add bomb resistant doors and windows to make them stronger.

In addition, developers are adding state of the art cameras in order to get a better look at what is happening on the property. One set of cameras that has been added to the National Harbor complex has the ability to zoom in and capture images in extremely high resolution. “If I wanted them cameras to tell me what’s on the screen of your phone, they could.” Digby says.

Experts have begun to realize that the initial design for buildings should include protective measures in order to protect against not only current threats, but threats that might develop in the future as well. Using many different layers is one of the best ways to achieve the goal of making the building itself resilient against any situation.

Life Safety Plans – Why this is Still a Necessity

With the growing technology in the 21st century, it’s important to realize that even if your company can afford to install bomb-proof windows and state of the art cameras that are able to read even the most far away text message, you should still ensure that your company is secure and protected by having a sufficient life safety plan and emergency action plan (EAP) in place. In fact, even if your company has all of the new state of the art security features, you still NEED to have a life safety plan and an EAP in place. Aside from the fact that OSHA and 24 states require written safety plans for specific workplace activities, having these helps protect employees from harm, as well as ensure that they are prepared for any incident that may arise. Technology is a wonderful thing, however sometimes technology does fail. If that failing moment is during an incident, your company needs to always have a plan in place to ensure the safety of all employees, visitors and clients.

Because there is so much that goes into creating life safety plans and EAPs, using a company like Preparis might be more time-efficient for you. Preparis is able to be your all-in-one solution, which will reduce the amount of time you spend stressing over this tedious process and increase the amount of time you are able to spend focusing on everything else you need to be doing.

However, companies should remember that once you create your plans you still need to educate employees on how to use the plans by setting up scheduled training sessions, as well as setting aside time to annually test the plans. Without testing and training, the plans will not perform to the best of their ability. Preparis offers many different training courses within the portal that include cybersecurity and workplace violence.

Emergency Notification Systems

In addition to EAPs and life safety plans, it is crucial for companies to also have an emergency notification system that allows them to efficiently communicate with employees and clients during an incident. Without an emergency notification system, companies run the risk of not being able to get in contact with employees to warn them of an emergency, or to update them on the status of an incident.

Preparis offers as an Emergency Notification and Incident Management System that allows companies to do the following:

  • Alert employees with a two-way emergency notification system, which features voice, text and email message delivery
  • Update the status of staff and students, along with the ability to document incidents
  • Create preset message templates or customize your own messages
  • Communicate with your entire organization or by role, group and department
