On December 19, 2014, the US Department of State issued a world travel alert warning those traveling abroad of the potential increase in terrorist activity, especially in light of the Sydney siege:

The lone wolf attack in Sydney, Australia on December 15, 2014, resulting in the deaths of two hostages, is a reminder that U.S. citizens should be extra cautious, maintain a very high level of vigilance, and take appropriate steps to enhance their personal security.

US Citizens are encouraged to remain alert to local conditions and signs of danger. Additionally, they are recommended to enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to stay up-to-date on warnings and make it easier for local embassy officials to contact you during an emergency.
